Composer/Librettist

A composer and librettist, I have just completed my third opera, "Lina and the Wolf," about the life of Lina Prokofiev, first wife of the composer. My folk opera, "The Fiddler and the Old Woman of Rumelia" was based entirely on pan-Balkan folk stories and songs (as "me-search" of my ethnic heritage), premiered in Boston by the Xanthos Ensemble (2011), and staged by the Juventas Ensemble (2012). My first dramatic project, a comic-book opera, "An Opera in Devolution: Drama in 540 Seconds," was performed at the 2003 Seventh Festival A*Devantgarde in Munich, as part of a single multi-composer production including 6 composers.

I launched a course for composers, on how to write opera and libretti, at Boston University, were I joined as Assistant Professor in 2005, after teaching at the University of Iowa for two years. I am also active as a collaborative pianist: I am part of a duo with violinist Katie Wolfe (faculty at the University of Iowa), and frequently perform with students and colleagues at Boston University. My CD's include "Listen to a Wonder Never Heard Before!" (Albany), "thresholds" (Parma), and "Viva Concertante!" (Albany).
