The opera industry continues to identify and support the creators of new works, while also working to address challenges and opportunities associated with producing in the 21st century. The New Works Forum is a series of sessions that offers insight, practical knowledge and networking opportunities for creators and producers of new opera and music-theater works.

Part 1, 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M.
Building the 21st Century Canon
This discussion will explore how a work moves beyond its premiere/co-commission into the active repertoire. Producers and publishers will share what it takes – beyond a good story, good music and a good libretto! – to create second and subsequent productions of contemporary American works.

Part 2, 2:00 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.
American Opera as a New Art Form
The field continues to treat new work as a modern extension of traditional European opera – producing, commissioning and engaging with audiences in generally similar ways. A panel-led discussion explores how contemporary artists and producers are finding new pathways to create work that connects with today’s communities. Concurrent with breakout sessions focusing on Education, Development and PR/Marketing topics.

Part 3, 3:30 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.
The New Works Forum concludes with a reconvening of all attendees to meet the 2018 Opera Grants for Female Composers Discovery grantees, learn about grant opportunities in 2018–2019 and share programming ideas for the January 2019 forum meeting at the National Opera Center in New York City.

There is no additional fee to attend the New Works Forum, and all conference attendees are encouraged to participate.

Opera on Broadway
Between the streamlined revival of Porgy and Bess in 1942 and the brief run of Menotti’s Maria Golovin in 1958, 18 productions of works by Weill, Blitzstein, Bernstein and Menotti brought the expansiveness of opera to the Great White Way. Although most of them avoided the label “opera,” many grappled with contemporary issues of race, ethnicity, diversity and inclusion in ways that remain relevant today. This lively panel will focus on the challenges and rewards of performing these proto-crossover pieces, with particular emphasis on the socially critical, musically diverse and dramatically potent Broadway operas of Weill, Blitzstein and Bernstein.
