Opera Artists as Activists
Opera is a powerful art form with the capacity to tell stories that are deeply personal and resonate with the world around us. Yet, the long development cycle of new works makes it difficult for opera to generate dialogue on the issues that matter most in an environment where last month’s pivotal issue has already been superseded. A panel of composers, directors and performers will discuss paths for artist-activists to inspire change through opera.

Opera on Broadway
Between the streamlined revival of Porgy and Bess in 1942 and the brief run of Menotti’s Maria Golovin in 1958, 18 productions of works by Weill, Blitzstein, Bernstein and Menotti brought the expansiveness of opera to the Great White Way. Although most of them avoided the label “opera,” many grappled with contemporary issues of race, ethnicity, diversity and inclusion in ways that remain relevant today. This lively panel will focus on the challenges and rewards of performing these proto-crossover pieces, with particular emphasis on the socially critical, musically diverse and dramatically potent Broadway operas of Weill, Blitzstein and Bernstein.

Innovation: Human-Centered Design Thinking
Opera is a human-centered art form, created by and for people. Too often, though, productions and performances are treated like "products" to be sold in the entertainment "marketplace." Design thinking focuses on serving the needs of people through listening, exploring alternative solutions, testing and tinkering with programs, listening again, and tossing away what does not meet specific needs. This session examines process frameworks that support different human-centered design objectives.

Program Evaluations for Grants
No grant application is complete without a statement about metrics. For some funders, a measure of attendance will suffice; others ask for complex logic models. At either extreme, responsible evaluation should demonstrate the impact of the program to funders and help the company learn from its successes and mistakes. In this session, hear from various foundation and corporate representatives about what they value in program evaluation and how they coach their grantees to learn from the same metrics.
