Storycatchers Theatre
Program Manager
CHERYL COONS is a program manager for the Temporary Lockdown Ensemble of Storycatchers Theatre, which serves the young residents of the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago. Storycatchers Theatre works exclusively with incarcerated or court-involved youth in the Chicago area, guiding young people to transform their traumatic experiences into powerful musical theatre, and inspiring them to become leaders and mentors. By creating support for youth within the criminal justice system, Storycatchers Theatre prepares them to change their lives and emerge successfully from court involvement.

Cheryl has also served as an animateur with the Chicago Voices Project of Lyric Opera of Chicago, creating original musical theatre works based on the untold stories of community groups throughout the city. She is the Regional Representative for the Dramatists Guild, and a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists. Her original musicals include River’s End (ASCAP Foundation Harold Arlen Musical Theatre Award, Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award, NAMT Festival, NYMF TAM Award), At Wit’s End (Carbonell Award), Sylvia’s Real Good Advice (Joseph Jefferson Award), and Phantom of the Country Opera (NAMT Festival, published by MTI.)
